OK, I know from hanging out in Wealthy Affiliate and I know from the Reaper Lens on List Building that less than half the people who attempt Internet Marketing are actually building a list of potential customers.

This is a big mistake! Perhaps, understandable but a mistake nonetheless.

Why? Because when you build a list of potential customers you are gaining multiple repeat opportunities to sell to those customers. Provided you do it right.

The key element is to build a relationship with your customers. To build trust… then when you recommend a particular product or service your customers will value your judgment and are therefore happy to make a purchase.

Sounds simple, right?

And it is!

So, I’m gonna be doing a series of posts on the mechanics of list building starting with this post.

We’ll look first on this post at why you should build a list, then subsequently we’ll look at how you get started including:-

  • Automating Your List Building
  • Offering Incentives
  • Ways to Capture Leads
  • Your Mail Message Series
  • Cross Selling to your list.

First, lets debunk a few myths about list building right from the off.

  • It is not hard to do.
  • It is not an advanced technique
  • Anyone can (and should) be building a list
  • You do not need a massive list (like the Gurus)
  • You do not have to have 50 page ebook or a magic software tool to give away
  • You can (and should) build a list in any niche
  • We are not talking about Spam. (Everyone hates that and it does not work)

Have I covered the ‘why’ part enough? Let’s repeat it again…

You are going to build a relationship with your customers… a mutually beneficial relationship!

Thad and I both, with the benefit of hindsight, wish we had started list building much sooner than we did. We were both a good six months into our Internet Marketing journey when we started.

The trigger for us was the release of Inside the List by Kyle and Carson (The owners of WA). Talk about a ‘light bulb moment’.

Anyway, we hope this series of posts on list building will have the same impact on you! (We would welcome any questions or comments as we go along.)

In a day or so, I’ll talk about the need to automate your list building. There is no getting around this and it does come at a cost. It’s actually very cheap when you consider how much time you would have to spend trying (and failing) to do it manually but there is a cost. Just so you know.

Thad and I use Aweber, so you might want to have a look and see at what’s on offer, etc. here. A good alternative is Getresponse.

PS. At the end of the ‘List Building Secrets‘ Blog series we’ll wrap the whole thing up into a free guide. So please feel free to add your comments, questions, suggestions or your own tips as we go along. The more we all put in, the more we’ll all get out of it!
