Squidoo Policy Updates – Still Feeling The Pain?
People are still feeling the pain from the July Squidoo Policy Updates and whilst I sympathise I have to say in a lot of cases it’s really their own fault.
Forget about what topics can and can not be written about… forget about if you previously had some money making lenses and they are now toast.
Fact is, you should only ever use third party sites like Squidoo on your OWN terms!
That means using them for testing.
And then, once you have some traction in a campaign you can breakout and grab your own domain and start building your own site. You can then return to your lenses and switch them to point at your own site.
Use these third party sites as supplemental and complimentary silos. Use them for backlinks.
Do not base your entire business plan around something you cannot fully control.
(Inside ANC we have a guide that shows you how easy it is to get your own sites up and running. There is a post about the guide here.)
People will continue to feel the pain from Squidoo until they take matters into their own hands. Even if your lenses haven’t been slapped yet, they might, as soon as you amend them. If in doubt, copy the content now so that it can be placed elsewhere if necessary.
Should you continue to use Squidoo? Yes!
But like I said, use it as supplement for your campaigns, not the basis.

Hey Dave. Saw a post in the WA forum on this. Guy had created hundreds of backlinks to a Squidoo lens and its now been locked. All that effort down the tubes. I haven’t used Squidoo much and I doubt I will now.
Hi John,
Yeah I bet it was the same post that I read. That’s why I posted this again. Fact is Squidoo have by no means finished their ‘purge’. A lot of lenses are only getting flagged following an update.
I still maintain that Squidoo can be effective though, as described above. Not as the focus of your backlinking strategy but part of it.
Dave is right. Doesn’t change the fact that Squidoo IS acting like a bratty, spoiled 12 year old.
I prefer not to use them because they clearly are doing something wrong.
The point here is though, if you’re going to build a bunch of backlinks to a page, point them to your own web properties instead of someone elses. Why put in all that hard work for others to benefit when you can build up your own sites value with the same amount of work?
Yeah, I agree Jay, it’s hard to remain ‘adult’ in your reactions to their blanket approach and patronising attitude, particularly when you see your lenses stuffed to the gills with those spammy non-relevant Glam ads.
Still, it’s their fish pond. Swim in it for backlinks but don’t drown with the effort.
